Snack Food Bakery

Summary

Heat recovery system installed on a snack food process oven line.

Recovery heat is used to heat both process liquids for coating on product and heating plant water.

Project qualified for energy efficiency rebate of $25,000.

Estimated annual energy savings is over $ 55,000.

ROI = 2.6 Years

Application:  Food manufacturer who is aggressively taking actions to reduce their energy use.

Source:  Exhaust stacks from a natural gas baking system discharging over 2 MM btu/hour of waste energy.

Utilization:  Perceptive Industries worked with company’s energy team to evaluate all possible uses for the recovered heat.  Through cost/payback analysis the consensus reached was to first heat the processing coating liquid required in the production cycle.  The second sink was to reduce energy use by heating and increasing the plants process water temperature.  The higher temperatures also improved the wash down cleaning operations through out the facility.

Recovery #1 takes a slightly caustic solution that is used in the production process.  This solution is maintained at 185°F.  It operates with a centrifugal pump and a weir tank.  Heating source was originally a 1MM tube burner.   Perceptive modified the system to pump this solution up through the heat exchanger and heat the water from an approx. temp. of 150 to 185°F.  This recovery will eliminate the normal operation of the burner.

Recovery #2 takes plant process water and heats it from 90°F to a target greater than 135°F.  Currently flow rate = 15 gpm.
